Device Management

ITS provides direct management support for over 6,000 Windows workstations at the university.  To deliver this service at scale, we leverage Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to remotely deploy operating systems, policies, applications, and patches on ITS managed workstations.  Microsoft has deprecated SCCM for workstations and has been focused on development of Intune, which is a cloud-based endpoint management solution.  Intune was originally designed as a mobile device management solution, but it has greatly expanded over time to include the capabilities of SCCM and to integrate strongly with the Microsoft ecosystem.  It enhances remote provisioning and self-service, features that are increasingly useful with a hybrid workforce.  As an example, a device recipient can set up a workstation for the first time while off-campus with ownership determined by the initial login.  Intune is the named successor to the legacy SCCM for workstation management.

ITS will begin the transition from SCCM to Intune.  All new Windows computers that are fully supported by ITS will be configured with Intune.  Computers that are maintained by central tools but are supported by staff outside of ITS will remain in the legacy framework for now.
