Migration to Microsoft 365

ITS has completed the migration from Google to Microsoft 365.

We communicated broadly in July of 2023 our plans to discontinue the institutional relationship with Google.  This decision was primarily made to avoid a future and escalating expense that the University would bear, but the move also unified our community on one platform, enabling more pervasive use of the Microsoft features.

While the decision made sound financial sense, we were aware that the change would be difficult.  Alumni were losing a service and connection with UConn.  Faculty, staff, and students were having their data and services moved to a platform that was potentially unfamiliar to them.  In response, we established the Alumni Forwarding Service so alumns, both current and future, could keep their UConn email address.  For our faculty, staff, and students, we sought to minimize the disruption and ease concerns about data transfer with extensive communication, support, and adequate notice.  We also created new training materials, classes, and presentations on Microsoft 365 apps to help them acclimate and will continue to develop these offerings.  For all intents and purposes, the migration is effectively complete with only a tiny number of stragglers outstanding.

This project could not have been completed without the cooperation and support of IT professionals across the University, and ITS appreciates their partnership.  We also want to thank our community for their patience and trust as we navigated this change together.
