ITS is focused on protecting our community, their personal information, and institutional data as we evolve systems, services, and capabilities. Phishing and other nefarious activities attempt to circumvent security practices by stealing your credentials and using them to access sensitive information. Two-factor authentication enhances security by adding an additional layer of protection to the authentication process; after entering your username and password, you are prompted to verify your identity with a second factor. This effectively prevents unauthorized access even if the password has been compromised.
ITS evaluated the concept, researched competing alternatives, and selected a product. We have informed service design by using two-factor authentication internally for select use cases. Ensuring the successful roll-out and widespread adoption of two-factor authentication will require assistance and support from the whole IT community, and we will provide additional communication as we move into the planning and staging phases of the project
